Wightlink – Seamless VSP Swap

Shrewd Investment

How Houlder's stability calculations enabled a smooth VSP removal for Wightlink

Precision Trim Achieves Seamless VSP Swap

With limited drydock availability, Wightlink faced a challenge in exchanging a Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) on the RO-PAX ferry, St Clare.

Wightlink needed a safe solution with no margin for error.

Houlder focused on ensuring the vessel's stability. Our team conducted detailed calculations of the ship’s condition.

To achieve the required clearance above the waterline, water bags were placed on the aft deck. A total of 227 tonnes of ballast maintained watertight integrity.

Our calculations were accurate, providing the trim needed to maintain clearance during the VSP removal.

The result?

The exchange went smoothly. The target clearance of 150mm was slightly exceeded, reaching approximately 160mm.

This precision restored the St Clare to service swiftly and safely.

In today’s pressured industry, expertise and preparation show that even challenging tasks can be successfully navigated.
