Anemoi – Wind-Assist Propulsion for Hazardous-Cargo Vessels

Realise FOAK Concepts

A major step forward in the decarbonisation of Anemoi’s global tanker fleet while meeting stringent hazardous-area safety requirements of electrical and control systems.

Applying wind power to the world’s most demanding vessels

Wind-assisted propulsion is already working for sectors of the shipping industry.

But one major segment remained out of reach.

Tankers.

Strict safety rules around hazardous cargo meant technologies like rotor sails couldn’t simply be applied. For Anemoi Marine Technologies, unlocking this market required a fundamental rethink.

Houlder was brought in to make it possible.

We focused on the critical barrier: the electrical and control systems that power the rotor sails. To operate safely on tanker decks, these systems had to meet the highest explosion-proof (EX) standards - in an area with limited precedent and evolving regulation.

Working closely with partners, we redesigned the system from the ground up.

The result?

A fully EX-compliant solution - engineered to work safely within hazardous zones, and flexible enough to be installed across a wide range of tanker vessels.

No workaround. No compromise. Just a clear, certifiable path to bringing wind propulsion into one of the most demanding environments in shipping.

A proven technology can now scale into the global tanker fleet - unlocking immediate fuel savings and accelerating decarbonisation where it matters most.

Turning possibility into real-world progress, at scale.
