Senior Marine Engineer

Overview of Role

To provide and apply technical expertise in marine engineering to influence the design, construction and conversion of a variety of vessels in the marine, offshore, defence and renewable sectors.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide expertise in our marine engineering consultancy capability

  • Consult with clients and interpret their requirements and needs

  • Manage marine design and consultancy projects, including tendering

  • Travel and on-site attendance for marine surveys in the UK or overseas

  • Preparation of equipment and system layouts and schematics e.g., ship systems or engine room layouts for new build and conversion projects

  • Undertake Plan review of specifications, drawings, diagrams, and other technical submissions in accordance with the established procedures

  • Monitor and co-ordinate ship repairs, refits, conversions, and new builds to ensure that the work follows the approved drawings and specifications and complies with acceptable marine standards

  • Oversight of inspection and testing of machinery and systems

  • Stay abreast of relevant legislation and developments in marine equipment and technology

  • Mentor and develop staff with less experience in marine engineering through informal channels

Essential

  • Around 10 years in the marine shipping industry

  • Experience in playing a primary role in a marine design or advisory environment and an ability to allocate decision making and other responsibilities to the appropriate person, inside or outside a project team

  • Proven success with project management of significant contracts/projects

  • Good knowledge/awareness of ship design and shipyard practices

  • Experience in interpreting and applying Classification Society, IMO and other rules and standards

Desirable

  • Undertaking ship surveys

  • Previous consultancy experience

  • Planning or supervision of newbuild or conversion projects

Qualifications and Accreditations

Essential

  • Qualification in Marine/Mechanical Engineering either in the form of an Engineering Degree, HND or equivalent.

  • Merchant Navy Engineer Certificate of Competency, Second Engineer Unlimited or equivalent qualification and sea going experience or Royal Navy equivalent

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer

  • Merchant Navy Engineering Certificate of Competency, Chief Engineer Unlimited or Royal Navy equivalent
