New Build

Houlder’s efficient vessel design process helps you through to shipyard tender. For convenience, we sometimes divide this into three phases: Pre-Concept, Concept and Basic Design. But always remember it’s one process with plenty of flexibility. We can start at any point. No prescribed activities must be done at set times, in a set order. There’s no defined level of detail to which we must work at any one time. In fact, it’s the judgement calls inherent in every activity which will determine project success.

So, the real question is less one of technical capabilities and more about doing the right things, at the right time. ‘Right’ should be defined by your priorities not your designer’s.

A design programme to suit a schedule-driven client won’t necessarily work for the risk averse, looking to delay commitments while uncertainties unfold.

Client comments

Jim Royston, Fleet Operations Manager at IOMSPC: “Throughout this project, Houlder has effectively integrated with the IOMSPC team, which has been hugely beneficial to this build. We last worked with Houlder on a newbuild back in the early 1990’s, and a lot has changed since then in terms of regulations and design standards. Through an in-depth understanding of our operations, Houlder has provided frictionless mediation between ourselves and HMD, offering constructive perspectives on challenges faced, and working proactively to minimise delays relating to class society approval. Essentially, it’s a service we didn’t know we needed, but one we’re incredibly grateful to now have access to.”

Andy Jeffries Associate Director, Major Programmes Team Natural Environment Research Council, UK Research and Innovation: “Involving Houlder from the beginning ensured the extensive process was built on reliable and expert foundations. We recognised the team’s extensive expertise in the design and engineering of specialist vessels. Their consultative, straight-talking approach proved invaluable throughout the tender process. We were pleased that Houlder went the extra mile to ensure that the RRS Sir David Attenborough included as many key features as possible while remaining a realistic vessel to build. We appreciated the results – strong bids from key shipyards.”
