We never tire of fatigue. Our repertoire of assessments ranges from simple, rule-based allowable stresses to large, global, spectral calculations over entire structures. We determine the fatigue life of a new design and estimate the current damage of ageing assets.

Houlder offers a range of fatigue assessments:

  • Beam, shell and solid element analysis using both nominal SN and hot spot approaches. From simplified assumptions to detailed development of assets’ environmental exposure profile.
  • Large global fatigue sensitivities whereby stress response operators for all elements of the structural model are computed and fatigue damage derived. This identifies the most critical areas and components for further detailed inspection.
  • Multi-process driven fatigue for when the fatigue is dominated by more than one process. A good example is a wind-assisted, propulsion device. When the device is in operation there are large wind fluctuating forces as well as inertial loads from the vessel motion.
  • Detailed time domain simulations of wind-assist devices to offer the best insight into the fully coupled response. Stress cycles are then rain flow counted from the simulations.
  • Mooring line fatigue ranging from simplified methods to detailed simulations and rain flow counting tension cycles across large sets of characteristic simulations.
  • Low cycle / high stress fatigue using plastic strain of the structure. This is often used to consider damage situations (accidental or other).
