Overview of Role
To undertake or lead analysis programmes focused on assessing and optimising vessel performance. These programmes involve a mixture of computational analysis, data analysis and physical experiments and are performed for a variety of stakeholders. The focus of these projects varies from optimising new concepts to improving the hydrodynamic efficiency of existing operational vessels. The role will involve visits to ships and hydrodynamic test facilities.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Technical Delivery
Act as technical lead and/or support computational analysis scopes that involve the use of potential flow software and RANS CFD.
Act as a leader or support a team for model tests, sea trials, and other site surveys.
Support and/or lead the continuous development of data acquisition systems that are used for model testing, sea trials and surveys.
Support wider Houlder team members to provide advice and guidance on technical matters in your area of expertise.
Interface with the wider ship design team to provide practical, actionable advice which supports the wider project delivery.
Act on initiative to develop solutions to technical challenges that suit Houlder’s ways of working and develop our capabilities.
Report technical work undertaken in an appropriate style to a range of audiences including internal stakeholders, technical client representatives and our clients’ senior management teams.
Client and Stakeholder Engagement
Liaise with clients to interpret their needs and produce technical proposals that fulfil the client’s requirements
Understand and analyse key project success criteria and propose solutions that balance those with potential technical risks and available budget
Lead or contribute to technical proposals to our clients including scope, costing and timescales
Project Management & Coordination
Manage a project team and subcontractors including scoping, performance monitoring and reviewing outputs across a range of disciplines including test model design/production, specialist monitoring capabilities and technical analysis.
Ensure that all proposed works to be carried out in the office, workshop, testing facilities and on-board vessels are carried out to best industry and statutory standards in a safe and cost-effective manner
Ensure that all work is performed, reviewed, checked and approved in accordance with the company’s procedures
Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential
Ability to travel in the UK and overseas at short notice
BEng (Hons), MEng, MSc or equivalent in Naval Architecture or other relevant subject with relevant industry experience
Applicant should have a solid engineering background, with demonstrable knowledge of hydrodynamic performance through simulation, model testing and sea trials
Desirable
Full UK Driving Licence
Experience of leading CFD performance assessments, model testing, and ship-board trials
Practical experience of electronics for the purpose of developing bespoke data acquisition systems
The ability to read and understands technical papers, guidance and procedures and implement the findings (such as through the development of analysis procedures)
Experience and/or knowledge of internationally recognised performance and sea trials analysis methods, e.g. ITTC and ISO.
Chartered, or working towards Chartered Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects or similar marine related professional body
Awareness of Classification society and Flag state rules and regulations
Desirable Software
Proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, Project etc. and other software such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros, and SolidWorks
Experience of Python coding for data acquisition and analysis
Familiarity with FineMarine, openFOAM, or equivalent
Familiarity with 2D/3D CAD software.
