Feasibility Study for Tidal Energy Turbine Deployment
Hydrodynamic, Stability and Structural Analysis
Houlder was asked to investigate possible methods of deploying and recovering large underwater turbines (Length 35m, diameter 22m and weight 1900T) designed to generate power from tidal currents. The challenge was to explore options and recommend an approach that proved reliable, safe and cost effective.
Six options were developed into workable solutions with drawings, deployment and recovery sequences and listings of the assets required. The advantages and disadvantages of each option together with rough order of magnitude costs were presented to the client.
The best features of all the options were combined into a “Houlder” Option which was recommended for further development.
