Supporting an Iconic Vessel on the Thames

Mooring Study, Structural Analysis, Wind Loading Calculations

Houlder’s headquarters are a few minutes’ walk from HMS BELFAST, the floating museum permanently moored in the shadow of Tower Bridge.

Earlier this year Silver Sea cruise liners exploited this prime location by berthing alongside the 187m warship. At an overall length of 155.81m and a displacement of 9757t for example, the Silver Wind presented a number of technical challenges. The Port of London Authority (PLA) commissioned Houlder to undertake a study of their mooring options. The maximum line tensions calculated reached 27.5t and recommendations included replacing bollards and using additional mooring lines in extreme weather.

This project builds on Houlder’s long standing relationship with the PLA and adds to our list of flagship Thames projects. This includes Richmond Lock, Tate Britain’s access pontoon and the London Eye.
